| The Mervyn Moore Memorial Lecture is named in honour of Mervyn Harry Moore, born in Newport in 1935 and passed away in October 2001 following his courageous battle against prostate cancer. In 1995 following major surgery, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer, Mervyn became a member of Progress Prostate Cancer Support Group and immediately became popular involving himself in all aspects of the charity’s work. He excelled as a clinic stand advisor, home visitor, telephone helpline and patient counsellor, the latter being an area where Mervyn possessed and portrayed a very special talent of deeply caring for his fellow man. Many members of Progress have said they will be eternally grateful to Mervyn for the warmth, compassion, support and friendship that he gave them and their families. Mervyn, without doubt, was a special person. A giant of a man who had a quiet, unassuming and yet inspiring manner. His presence in your company stood out like a shining beacon, without ever imposing himself on you. He was a warm, caring, friendly and understanding man of mighty stature who portrayed an image of a person that you could always trust. Such was the measure and character of Mervyn Moore: here was a man you felt would always be there for you. If you cherish and value the terms of life, love, compassion, family and friendship, then you also share Mervyn’s beliefs. Mervyn believed strongly in the aims of PROGRESS – research, education and support – and he worked tirelessly to increase awareness of prostate cancer. He battled courageously against the disease and his fight against prostate cancer continues through the memorial lecture that now bears his name. The Mervyn Moore Memorial Lecture 2007 will take place at County Hall, Croesyceiliog, South Wales on Friday 11th May 2007, beginning at 1pm.
